LOOKING FOR A Chiropodist Cannock or a Foot Health Practitioner – what’s the difference?

You would not be alone in wondering what the difference is between a Chiropodist Cannock, a Podiatrist, and a Foot Healthcare Practitioner (FHP).

In fact, a Chiropodist and a Podiatrist are one and the same, with Podiatry being recognised as the international name in the UK since 1993.

Chiropodist’s and FHP’s both treat an array of foot and lower leg problems with the most common being hard skin (callous), in growing toenails, fungal nail infections, verrucae and corns.

Typically a Chiropodist / Podiatrist will treat:

  • Chronic deformities, e.g. hammertoe
  • Total nail removal
  • Chronic pain involving the bones of the feet, ankles and lower limbs
  • Arthritic conditions
  • Diabetic foot care
  • Skin problems of the foot
  • Orthotic prescriptions
  • Advice on correct foot care

The Chiropodist Cannock is capable of taking on cases requiring specialist knowledge outside of that dealt with by a FHP, where disease and pathological conditions of the foot and lower limbs are addressed. A medical professional must be registered with the HCPC  to use the title Chiropodist or Podiatrist. Should you feel a Chiropodist Cannock is more suited to your needs, you can easily find one by doing a google search Chiropodist near me, or Yell.com usually have a full listing.

WHAT IS A FOOT HEALTH PRACTITIONER (FHP)

The FHP is trained to focus on the lower limbs and feet, providing treatment for minor ailments. Our work is non-invasive but can include minor external surgery performed without analgesia. Typical procedures carried out are for corn removal, ingrown toenails and callus (hard skin) removal. We assess foot positioning on walking along with an examination of the structure and condition of the lower limb and foot. The work carried out by a FHP far exceeds that of those trained to provide a nail cutting service.

TYPICALLY A FHP PROVIDES HELP AND GUIDANCE IN THE FOLLOWING AREAS:

  • Corns, bunions and plantar warts (verruca)
  • Evaluation and removal of ingrown toenails
  • Diabetic foot care – nail trimming and filing
  • Skin problems of feet
  • Deformations such as hammertoe
  • Pain involving bones of feet, ankles and lower leg
  • Advise and help with insoles for shoes
  • Advise as to proper footwear

FHPs trained at the College of Foot Health Practitioners are members of an accredited voluntary register (Alliance of Private Sector Workers) which has been independently vetted and approved by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

The PSA ensures membership of the accredited register demonstrates that the member has met the set standards of good practice and governance.
